Acts of Creation

The Stories We Write and the Lives We Grow
12 May 2026
I began writing long before I became a mother.
And yet, the arrival of my children coincided with some of the most important milestones in my writing life: completing In-Between and Soul-Threader.
Two forms of creation, unfolding side by side.
It is difficult to describe the shift that followed. Motherhood changes you in ways that are both visible and invisible. Writing a book does much the same. Both reshape your sense of identity, your relationship to time, and your understanding of what matters.
I have never believed that motherhood should define me entirely. I want to be many things, and I hope to pass that same belief on to my sons.
But its impact on my writing, my creativity, and my daily life has been profound.
What has changed
There was a time when I could write for hours without interruption. Long stretches of focus, early mornings, late evenings, entire days dedicated to a single project. 10,000 words burst out of me without any difficulty. Long walks were spent thinking about one scene.
That rhythm, that life, no longer exists.
Now, my writing lives in smaller, more structured spaces. A few hours at a time, carefully protected, often between other responsibilities. I write knowing I may have to stop at any moment.
Reading has changed too. What was once abundant is now intentional. A few pages at a time, chosen with care.
There is a sense of loss in that shift. A version of life that has quietly closed.
What motherhood has given me
And yet, something else has opened in its place.
Motherhood has deepened my understanding of emotions in ways I could not have anticipated. It has sharpened my sense of love, fear, resilience, selflessness, patience and vulnerability.
Even though my protagonists are not parents, I now approach their emotional journeys differently. There is a greater awareness of what is at stake. A greater sensitivity to loss, to connection, to what it means to protect something fragile.
It has also forced clarity.
There is less space for hesitation, for overcommitment, for saying yes to everything. Time is finite, and so choices matter more.
Writing has become not just something I do, but something I actively choose to prioritise.
What comes next
I still want the same things I did before.
- To write stories that explore identity and belonging.
- To create worlds that feel both magical and dangerous.
- To make readers feel something lasting. To make them hope, laugh, cry, dream.
Motherhood has not taken that away.
If anything, it has made it sharper.

✨ An update on my writing journey
Alongside this new chapter of motherhood, my writing journey continues to evolve.
Alongside this new chapter of motherhood, my writing journey continues to evolve.
Soul-Threader, my adult dark romantic fantasy, is currently on submission, while In-Between 2 is taking shape behind the scenes.
Both projects are unfolding more slowly than before, but perhaps with greater intention. This new chapter of my life has changed how I write, but not why I write.
